Okay, I went to the vet to get Peanut's worm check up and preventions and I weighed him and he was 24 POUNDS! From 19.5 to 24 lbs! The front desk peeps said he was over weight by 2 pounds.... wait, aren't corgis supposed to be at the most, 27 pounds? I guess it was his size and/or age because they considered him a small dog even though corgis are MEDIUM dogs. Ugh. He is a year old and he is fully grown so I don't get that. Any answers to this?
Aren't male Pembrokes able to even get up to 30? By no means is Peanut fat!
ReplyDeleteUm, I don't know cause I have cardis. Can you still feel his ribs (not see them)? If so and he has a "waist," he's fine.
ReplyDeleteHe's totally fine. Dexter is 25 lbs now, we were told not to let him get above 30, but Elizabeth is right. As long as he still has a Corgi figure and a waist, he's just fine. When he's shaped like a Twinkie you have a problem :)
ReplyDelete24 lbs is definitely not overweight unless Peanut is a tiny corgi :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe, like for people, it goes by his height and length and not by his breed? We have no clue though... as long as he is healthy and happy, he is probably fine!
ReplyDeleteThe front desk peeps don't know what they're talking about. :)
ReplyDeleteToby is 30 lbs and this is his adult weight and at the vet they never told us that he's overweight.
The breed standard calls for a maximum weight of 30lbs for male Corgis. But Corgis come in a variety of "frame sizes" so weight will vary with the dog. When Peanut stands and you run your hands with slight pressure down his sides, you should *just* be able to feel his ribs.
ReplyDeleteFWIW, my pal Gromit is BIG and at 30lbs looks skinny. His normal weight is about 31-32lbs and his breeder feels he looks good at that weight.
